Top 5 Alagoas Destinations

Alagoas - The Brazilian Caribbean

Alagoas is the second smallest state in Brazil. It is nicknamed the Brazilian Caribbean for the calm seas of green-blue water, white sand beaches, vibrant palm trees, and millions of colorful fish. Jangadeiros, the captains of the colorful sailboats dotting the state's coast, make Alagoas extra-special.

It is encouraged to rent a car and stop at many of the jaw-dropping beaches throughout Alagoas. It is popular and safe to drive along the AL-101, which is 274 km (170 miles). The AL-101 southernmost point is Piacabucu and the northernmost point is Maragogi. The North portion of Alagoas is often referred to as the Costa dos Corais (Coral Coast).

*Pro Tip: Stop at an ATM and grab some cash for beach vendors.

The 5 Best Beaches from South to North

Map

1. Praia do Gunga

Approximately 50 minutes south of Maceió on the AL-101 you will find Praia do Gunga. There are tours to Praia do Gunga for $65 RS in a shared van or $150 RS in a private van but you can also rent a car and drive.

The entrance has a big sign "Praia do Gunga" and to the right of the sign you can stop at the Mirante do Gunga. The cost to ascend the Mirante is $4 RS and it is worth it. The top boasts views of a sprawling palm tree plantation that seems to go on forever. After the Mirante, enter through the gates and drive down to the beach. There are plenty of beach vendors offering drinks, food, water sports and good vibes.

2. Carro Quebrado

Located in between Maceió and the Ecological Route is Carro Quebrado. Renting a car is the easiest way to get here. The bus system is not reliable and adds significant time to the journey.

This beach is a must see as it is one of Brazil’s most beautiful and most deserted beaches. In the mornings, the beach is empty except for a man selling coconuts out of a fridge. The water is warm and the contrast against the red rocks and white sand is incredible with the clear blue sky. Don't miss the broken down VW buggy!

*Pro tip: it is a safe area but take all belongings out of the car and crack the windows so there is less chance of a break-in.

3. Ipioca

Just 45 minutes North of Maceió is Ipioca, a quiet beach lined palm trees. Take a photo at the blue door – located next to the Waterfront Apart Hotel. The point of Ipioca has white sand and clear blue water on a sunny day. This is a popular place to stay for those who are looking for something quiet and relaxing.

4. São Miguel dos Milagres

Located on the Ecological is São Miguel dos Milagres, the home to Jangadeiros that sail to the famous natural pools. It is a 15 minute ride to the natural pools where many Jangadeiros anchor so guests can swim with the yellow striped fish for 1.5 hours.

The Mirante Alto do Cruzeiro has a nice view and is located in the center of São Miguel behind the church. You can also check out Toque Praia - about a 5 minute drive North.

5. Walk of Moses

Drive 12 minutes North of Maragogi to the Walk of Moses. Just when you think you have seen all of the most beautiful beaches, you arrive here and are blown away again.

Walk of Moses (Caminho de Moises) is a sandbar walk in Barra Grande. It is best when the tide is low and the water is nonexistent, so check the tide tables before you go (link here). The walk is about 3 km long and it can get crowded.

*Pro Tips:

Start and end the walk with enough time to get back before the tide gets too high.

Bring a drone for incredible photos.

Praia de Antunes is a 7 minute drive North of the Walk of Moses. It is nice to spend the day here and have lunch at a table in the sand and check out the vendors that sell clothes and other beach items.
